Types of acne

The classification and treatment of acne is also influenced by its type. There can be an active or inactive form of acne: The active form of acne means the presence of comedones, inflammatory papules and pustules. Inactive (or well-controlled acne) means no comedones, inflamed papules or pustules. Inactive acne is often treated with laser therapy, which destroys the scars.

Acne treatments

The treatment regimen your doctor recommends depends on your age, the type and severity of your acne. For example, you may need to apply prescribed medication to the affected skin twice a day for several weeks. Most often, prescribed oral medications are used in combination with another treatment method. Treatment options for pregnant women are limited due to the risk of side effects. Treatment and prevention of most mild forms of acne often include proper skin care with topical retinoids and sometimes medications such as salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, or antibiotics. Combined oral contraceptives and antiandrogen therapy may also be used in women.

Duration of acne treatment

The usual minimum duration of treatment is 6-8 weeks, but can be given up to 12-18 weeks or longer.
